Dear Columbia Families,

As we arrive at the close of another calendar year, I find myself reflecting on just how much our students and staff have accomplished this fall. From joyful classroom moments to steady academic growth, our school has been filled with curiosity, effort, and community. I hope you’ve seen this reflected in your child’s recent progress reports and in the conversations you shared during parent-teacher conferences.

The upcoming winter break offers all of us—students, families, and staff alike—a welcome opportunity to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with loved ones. I want to express my sincere gratitude for your continued partnership in your child’s education. Your encouragement, your presence, and your support of our school make a significant difference in the daily life of our learners.

As many of our families celebrate traditions such as Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or other meaningful holidays during this season, I wish you moments of joy, connection, and peace. No matter how you spend these weeks, may they bring warmth to your home and renewal for the year ahead.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in January, ready for a new year filled with growth and possibility.

Warmest wishes,
Bruce Denton

Curious About School Delays or Cancelations?

Curious About School Delays or Cancelations? School may be delayed or canceled because of weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions. The district communicates school closures and delays in a variety of ways including phone calls, emails and text messages to families. That means it is important to keep contact information up to date with your child’s school. Additionally, we post information on our district website, social media spaces and to local TV and radio stations. Learn more about staying informed during weather events by clicking THIS LINK.

Holiday Parties and Celebrations

Traditions and celebrations are a part of American culture and heritage; they help students understand the seasonal calendar and their place in a larger community. We are sensitive to the diverse cultures of our Columbia community and will seek to include learning about the cultures represented by our students. In the event your child will not participate in school or classroom planned activities, we will provide alternate learning activities.

Sorry, no home-prepared goodies should be served. We need to be able to read ingredient lists on packaging to ensure the safety of students with allergies. Check with your child’s teacher regarding possible food allergies in the classroom.

  • All baked goods must be store bought and in original wrappers
  • All juices must be canned or bottled and unopened
  • All candy should be individually wrapped
  • Healthy treats are strongly encouraged

In some cases, no food items are allowed in classrooms; as a result, treats may be served in the lunchroom during lunch time. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Holiday Attendance Reminder

It's tempting to extend your vacation by a few days, but remember, those days do count as absences. If travel must occur while school is in session, it must be prearranged. Please fill the PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCE FORM and submit it 1 week before the planned absence. Completion and submission of this form will assure that your child's absence is properly documented.

Notes from Nurse Liberty:

Check-ups

During winter break is a good time to schedule an appointment with your child’s doctor for his/her medical checkup, if you have not already done so. The visits typically include a physical exam, as well as growth monitoring, developmental screening, immunizations, expert guidance, and other screenings based on age. These checkups can be used for enrollment in daycare centers, schools, Head Start, and sports programs.
Elementary students well child exams are recommended at the following ages: 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, 8 years and 10 years. There’s no greater peace of mind than knowing that your child is thriving and healthy.
