Dear Columbia Families,

May is always a meaningful time in our school. As the days grow longer and the school year begins to wind down, we have many opportunities to pause and notice just how much growth has taken place—academically, socially, and emotionally. Walking through classrooms this spring, I see students applying strategies more independently, engaging thoughtfully with peers, and reflecting more deeply on their learning. These moments are powerful reminders of how much can happen in the course of one school year.

Of course, this growth does not happen on its own. It is the result of consistent care, planning, and dedication from the adults who work with your children every day. Teachers thoughtfully design lessons, adjust instruction, assess learning, and provide feedback so each student can continue to move forward. At the same time, many others play essential roles in supporting students—paraeducators, specialists, counselors, office staff, custodians, nutrition services, and playground supervisors all contribute to making Columbia a safe and supportive place to learn.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4–8, and it gives us an opportunity to recognize not only our teachers, but all members of our Columbia staff. Schools truly function as teams, and every role matters. A kind note, a short email, or a word of thanks from a student or family can make a lasting difference. These gestures remind staff that their hard work, patience, and commitment are noticed and valued.

As we head into the final stretch of the year, I encourage you to take a moment with your child to reflect on how far they have come and to help them recognize the many people who supported that growth along the way. I am incredibly grateful to be part of such a dedicated and caring school community, and I appreciate the partnership we share with our families.

On another note, while we are making the most of our current year, we are also preparing for next year. Please look for the messages in this newsletter about class placement. We have extended the last date to complete the parent input form to Monday May 4th. Also, if your kindergarten through fourth grade child won’t be returning to Columbia, please let us know as soon as possible to help us adjust plans for next year.

Warm regards,
Bruce Denton

Important Student Information:

Student Placement:

Here at Columbia we carefully assign students to classes considering academic, behavior and social needs. This is a team effort and each team makes it a priority to place your child with a teacher who best fits your child’s learning style and needs. If you would like to provide input to this process, an online parental input form is available. Please know that we cannot accommodate requests for specific teachers. Completing the form is optional. Submissions are due by Monday, May 4th.

Keep in mind, your child’s current teacher will receive this input and present it to the placement team. Please click the link here and use this form only. Please avoid letters, calls or emails for placement purposes. If you need help with the form please email Taressa in our front office:

Students Leaving Columbia?
