Dear Columbia Families,

In September, classrooms came together as communities and students learned about Columbia’s PAWS (Practice safety, Act responsibly, Work together and Show kindness). Teachers assessed students to find out what they already know and classes have been digging into academic work. The school year at Columbia is off to a great start!

We have a lot of experience on our staff, as well as a willingness to solve problems. Sometimes we don’t get things right, though. When that happens, please reach out to us so we can work together to solve problems. First, connect with the teacher. Most problems can be resolved at this level. Sometimes teachers may need assistance (for example, the problem is happening with students from different classes). When that happens, teachers will reach out to our Cub Den (behavior support) team for support. If working with the teacher doesn’t resolve the problem, please reach out to me. Sometimes I hear that there were problems all year and parents didn’t reach out to us. Sometimes I hear about complaining on social media instead of working with the school. Neither option gives us an opportunity to solve problems. I hope you will reach out and collaborate with us.

Our PTA Read-A-Thon fundraiser has launched. We so appreciate your support! Funds raised go to classroom grants, activities, the art docent program, and more. The PTA has structured the Read-A-Thon so all students can participate, even if they are not collecting money. October also means it is time for Walktober Wednesdays. I hope you will join staff members, Columbia families and community members as we walk from the Mukilteo Library to school on Wednesday mornings through the month. Finally, be sure to put the PTA Pajama Jam on your calendar for October 17!

I hope that 2024-25 is a great year for your children who attend Columbia and your whole family. We have an amazing year of learning and growth ahead of us!

Warm regards,
Bruce Denton

Walktober Wednesdays 2, 9, 16, 23
Join us as we encourage kids to walk and ride to school safely! We promote safety while walking to school, allowing teachers and local community service members to walk with students allows them to interact with them in other positive ways. The police department, the fire department, the mayor and our superintendent have all been invited and are supporters of this program. Students MUST be accompanied by a grown-up to participate. We meet at the Mukilteo Library at 8:20 and leave promptly for school at 8:30. See you there!

Cougar Attendance Matters!
Did you know that just TWO absent days a month can make it harder for your student to stay on track? We care about your student's attendance! If you need support, please call us at (425) 366-2600. If your student is absent, please contact our 24 Hour attendance line at (425) 366-2605. Please include: Student First and Last Name, Date of absence, and Reason for absence. We will only return your call if we have questions.

Early Pick-Up
If your child will be leaving early, families/guardians need to send a note, email the teacher or call the office on the main line at 425-366-2600. (Avoid calling between 8:45-9:15 AM) Please do not leave a message on the attendance line. Please avoid picking up during their lunch, recess or time with specialists, as it may take extra time to retrieve your student. Only an authorized person may take a child from school. Any student being dismissed prior to the regular dismissal time must be met in the office and must be signed out by the parent/guardian or authorized person picking them up.

Pre-Arranged Absence
Any absence not specifically covered, such as family vacations or other extended absence, must have a Principal approved pre-arranged absence form in order to be excused. This form must be submitted to the school office one week prior to the scheduled absence.
